the seed of this song lives in an instagram video from 4.17.17. it was late and i was sleepy in a house in lefferts gardens playing a wacked-out acoustic guitar with five rusty strings and action jacked up about four inches off the fretboard. i brought that video to a miniature writing session with my pals sean mullins and jesse bielenberg at the end of the summer, just before leaving town for two and a half months. a scattered sadness was racking my whole body -- i had never been "away" from any place i had called "home" for that much time before. i jetted off a week or two later, and let the session sit idle until this week. i opened it on a whim and overdubbed the rest of the arrangement. it was once a six-and-a-half-minute-long song until i sped up the instrumental a bit on tape. i wrote a bunch of too-sad lyrics when i was feeling very sad and then i deleted all of them. i wrote some better (slightly less sad) lyrics and recorded them last night.
